Preparing for possible inclement weather for Tuesday, February 11
HCPS Families and Staff:
We are closely watching local weather forecasts predicting snow and ice on Tuesday, Feb. 11. As always, the safety of our students and staff is our first consideration. At the same time, we are also committed to providing learning experiences for students even when winter weather disrupts school operations.
The HCPS calendar includes built-in instructional time to accommodate unplanned closures. This extra time has allowed us to absorb the six days we missed school we had in January without compromising instruction. However, with most of that extra time now used, we will either need to leverage remote learning or look for ways to make up lost instructional time by adding minutes to the day or converting half-days or holidays into full school days.
IF school operations change tomorrow, Tuesday will be an asynchronous remote learning day. That means that students will access learning materials independently online to complete their work. There will be no live class meetings. Students will complete their work at any time during the day and must submit assignments to their teacher within 7 school days. To prepare for potential remote learning, teachers have been practicing with students in class, reminding them where and how to log in to access their assignments.
You can help prepare students at home by ensuring their school-issued laptops and tablets are fully charged. This step is important now before any power outages may occur. Stay tuned to Schoology or your school website to monitor the situation. Thanks!

Welcome to our new library feature: Reader Spotlight!

The City and Its Uncertain Walls by Haruki Murakami
Why did you choose this book?
I chose this book mainly because I have a deep liking for most of Murakami’s works. While sometimes I can disagree with his shaping of certain characters, I usually find that the worlds that he places them in are worlds that I love learning about. The places where his characters reside or travel to always seem familiar yet novel, which keeps me hooked as a reader. I deeply enjoy how he connects his worlds and love how if you’ve read one thing by him, you’re bound to find some overlap in another work that you’re reading that serves as a little nod from him.
Do you recommend it?
I think I would recommend this book to anyone who simply loves a good fiction read with “gray” characters. If they’re a fan of an author who has a distinct style and a strong voice then this is right up their alley, I suppose. Also, anyone who is looking for a book provides some commentary about the world we live in post-pandemic times is going to find this book to be interesting!
Thanks for joining us and stay tuned for more amazing readers to come!
