Welcome to our new library feature: Reader Spotlight!
Each week, we are highlighting different readers from our community and the books they are currently reading. Follow @JagLibrary for more. Our very first feature is English teacher, basketball coach, and dog dad extraordinaire Mr. Stephens!
The City and Its Uncertain Walls by Haruki Murakami
Why did you choose this book?
I chose this book mainly because I have a deep liking for most of Murakami’s works. While sometimes I can disagree with his shaping of certain characters, I usually find that the worlds that he places them in are worlds that I love learning about. The places where his characters reside or travel to always seem familiar yet novel, which keeps me hooked as a reader. I deeply enjoy how he connects his worlds and love how if you’ve read one thing by him, you’re bound to find some overlap in another work that you’re reading that serves as a little nod from him.
Do you recommend it?
I think I would recommend this book to anyone who simply loves a good fiction read with “gray” characters. If they’re a fan of an author who has a distinct style and a strong voice then this is right up their alley, I suppose. Also, anyone who is looking for a book provides some commentary about the world we live in post-pandemic times is going to find this book to be interesting!
Thanks for joining us and stay tuned for more amazing readers to come!

HCPS students, families and staff:
We know you have questions about the approaching winter storm and the potential impact on schools. Here are answers to your “Snow Day FAQ” for Friday, Jan. 3.
1. Yes. We are aware of the potential for snow and ice on Monday and are monitoring weather forecasts as they develop.
2. Yes. A snow day right after winter break would be cool.
3. No. We haven’t decided about any potential closure yet.
4. All of the above. You can help us prepare for a possible snow day by a) wearing your PJs inside out, b) flushing ice cubes, and c) checking ParentSquare for updates.
Enjoy the remainder of your winter break. We look forward to seeing you Monday (maybe).
Sincerely, Henrico County Public Schools
With the weather turning colder, it’s a good time to remind our community that if weather conditions change the school schedule in any way, all staff, parents and guardians will be contacted via the ParentSquare phone, email and text notification system as soon as a decision is made. Note that the following outlets are controlled by HCPS and will have the most complete and accurate information available:
